Java Concurrency and Volatile - all that jazz →
Seems like bad semantics to me. A mutable object should not be copied and become immutable without an instruction to do so. This is an optimisation and thus shouldn’t be the default.
The variable str(which is a copy in the new thread) would be existing in a scope that it hasn’t been declared for. wtf?

As we left the room, my friend Mark was raging. “My God! How can all those people be so stupid?” I tried to be understanding. “Mark, they knew this stuff at one time, but it’s not part of their basic view of the world, so they’ve forgotten it. Most people could probably make the same mistake.”

It’s not “hackers”, it’s large numbers of bored people with a little bit of time to spare. This wasn’t a “great hack”, but it would have taken no time at all to setup and the outcome was pretty funny. Human beings can now collaborate on a massive scale for the most useless of purposes, this is an amazing thing

I once thought that in the software industry thinks change so quickly that if I just wait anything I was going to build will be built by someone else.
As years go by I realise that if you leave a job to other people they will evidently do it wrong and then I’ll have to deal with the world and headaches they created.
